Why the names overlap
Some manufacturers use several names for the same compact weld-on product group. Guden’s bullet-hinge listing, for example, also uses barrel and cylinder terminology. This is evidence of overlapping trade names, not a universal naming standard.
“Weld-on” describes how a hinge is attached. “Bullet,” “barrel” and “cylinder” often describe its general appearance. Neither tells you the exact pin arrangement, assembled length or mounting geometry. When comparing suppliers, retain their product references rather than translating every name into one assumed equivalent.

| Name in a request | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Bullet or barrel hinge | Product drawing, mounting method and assembled dimensions |
| Weld-on hinge | Body profile, pin arrangement and intended mounting surfaces |
| Water-drop or teardrop hinge | Exact family and the profile shown in its drawing |
| Lift-off or removable hinge | How the parts separate and the space needed to do so |
The broad word “barrel” also appears in other hinge categories. Include “weld-on” and an installation image when you mean a hinge for a fabricated metal door. This helps prevent a quotation for a different mounting arrangement.
How to find the HINGETRA reference
On this website, use the named family shown on the product page. Round and pin hinges are separate entries, with separate images and size records. The water-drop group also includes bearing, gasket, grease-nipple and 20 type hinges. Keep those distinctions when requesting a quote.
Two families to identify by their own drawings

Do not carry a dimension or material description from another supplier’s bullet hinge into a HINGETRA inquiry as if it were a published HINGETRA option. Send it as a buyer requirement and identify the feature that must match.
Write a request that can be checked
- Include the supplier product link or catalog reference, not just the trade name.
- Attach a drawing with overall dimensions and the mounting profile.
- State whether the door must separate from the frame.
- Show any reference part as a comparison and identify the dimensions that must match.
For example: “We are looking for a weld-on hinge matching the attached section. The reference was described as a barrel hinge; please check the pin arrangement and marked dimensions.” This leaves the naming question open while making the actual requirement clear.
Next, compare bearing, pin and washer constructions or check the size notation guide before sending the inquiry.
